Lets Talk Eating, Sustainably

Hello Belfast 👋 I’m Dylan - and This Is About Eating Better (Without Giving Up Eating Out)

If you love eating out in Belfast and care about where your food comes from, how it’s made and who it impacts - you’re in the right place.

I’m Dylan. I’m someone who genuinely loves food: the buzz of a busy restaurant, a really well-cooked plate, good service and that feeling when you’ve had a great meal and want to tell everyone about it. But I also care deeply about environmental and social sustainability - and I’ve often felt like those two worlds don’t always meet as easily as they should.

This blog exists to change that.

Why This Blog Exists

Belfast has an incredible food scene. From seafood to street food to fine dining, we punch well above our weight. But as diners become more conscious about climate impact, ethical sourcing and fair treatment of staff, it can be hard to know where to eat without doing hours of research - or feeling preachy about it.

This blog is for people who:

  • Love eating out

  • Care about sustainability (environmental and social)

  • Want honest, accessible reviews

  • Don’t want perfection - just progress

You don’t need to be vegan, zero-waste or an expert on supply chains to care. You just need to want your money to go somewhere that’s trying to do the right thing.

What I’ll Be Doing Here

I’ll be reviewing restaurants around Belfast that make sustainability claims - whether that’s ethical sourcing, local produce, sustainable seafood, fair employment practices or reducing waste.

For each place, I’ll look at three main things:

  1. The Food
Because let’s be honest, if the food isn’t good nothing else matters. Taste, quality, value and whether I’d actually go back.

  2. Their Practices
I’ll dig into what they say they’re doing and how that shows up in reality. This isn’t a “gotcha” blog it’s about transparency, effort, and impact.

  3. Customer Experience
Service matters. Atmosphere matters. Feeling welcome matters. Sustainability should improve hospitality, not suck the joy out of it.

A great example of the kind of place I’ll be reviewing is Fish City - a Belfast favourite that promotes sustainable seafood. When I review somewhere like that, I’ll look at what’s on the plate, where the fish comes from, how staff are treated and how the overall experience feels as a customer.

What This Blog Is Not

This isn’t about shaming restaurants.
It’s not about perfection.
And it’s definitely not about telling you how to eat.

It is about celebrating places that are making thoughtful choices, being honest when something feels like greenwashing and helping people make informed decisions - without killing the buzz of a good night out.

Why Belfast?

Because this city matters to me.
Because local businesses matter.
And because small choices, made often, in one place, can genuinely add up.

If this blog helps even a few people discover a restaurant they love and feel good about supporting, then it’s doing its job.

So welcome. Pull up a chair. Let’s eat well, ask better questions and support the kind of food scene Belfast deserves.

Dylan

Fish City, Belfast: A Delicious Meal with a Responsible Heart

Fish City, Belfast: A Delicious Meal with a Responsible Heart 🍽️🌍 Last week I finally made it to  Fish City  in Belfast and let me tell you, it was one of the best meals I’ve had in the city in a long while. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming , blending modern flair with a genuine love for seafood ; something that feels  right  at home here in the heart of Belfast. For my main course, I chose the  Thai Coconut & Ginger Seafood Broth  and wow. The flavours were vibrant and perfectly balanced: rich coconut creaminess cut through with fresh ginger zest, generous chunks of succulent seafood, and herbs that lifted every spoonful. It was comforting yet sophisticated, a dish that made me slow down and savour each bite. To finish, I couldn’t resist the  Kirsch Cherry & Peanut Butter Cheesecake . It was a revelation. Smooth, creamy cheesecake with just the right hit of kirsch cherry tang and a delightfully nutty peanut...

Smart Cafe, Belmont Road. Good Food with A Strong Purpose

Tucked away on the Belmont Road in East Belfast,  Smart  is the kind of cafe that feels rooted in its community from the moment you walk in. It’s relaxed, welcoming and clearly built around doing things properly, on the plate and behind the scenes too. This is a place that knows its regulars, supports its neighbours and takes pride in small details that add up to something meaningful! Food wise, Smart delivers exactly what you want from a local cafe. It's comforting, well made and delicious. I went for the  breakfast bap  and it absolutely hit the spot. Fresh bread, generously filled and cooked with care. It was one of those simple breakfasts that reminds you how good things can be when quality ingredients are handled well. Nothing overworked, nothing trying too hard, just a solid, tasty start to the day. To drink, I ordered a  vanilla matcha , which was smooth, sweet and nicely balanced. The matcha flavour came through without being overpowering and the vanilla...
