Fish City, Belfast: A Delicious Meal with a Responsible Heart 🍽️🌍
Last week I finally made it to Fish City in Belfast and let me tell you, it was one of the best meals I’ve had in the city in a long while. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, blending modern flair with a genuine love for seafood; something that feels right at home here in the heart of Belfast.
For my main course, I chose the Thai Coconut & Ginger Seafood Broth and wow. The flavours were vibrant and perfectly balanced: rich coconut creaminess cut through with fresh ginger zest, generous chunks of succulent seafood, and herbs that lifted every spoonful. It was comforting yet sophisticated, a dish that made me slow down and savour each bite.
To finish, I couldn’t resist the Kirsch Cherry & Peanut Butter Cheesecake. It was a revelation. Smooth, creamy cheesecake with just the right hit of kirsch cherry tang and a delightfully nutty peanut butter base that didn’t overpower. It felt indulgent without being too heavy, a flawless dessert to round off a standout meal.
Sustainability That Actually Means Something 🌱
Now let’s talk about what makes Fish City truly impressive: their commitment to sustainability. This isn’t just lip service, it’s baked into who they are as a business and a restaurant. They were the first business in Northern Ireland to take the Sustainable Fish Cities pledge, part of a wider campaign to responsibly source seafood and champion marine health. They’re also the first restaurant on the island of Ireland to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which means the seafood on your plate can be traced back to well-managed, sustainable fisheries. A big deal for ocean conservation.
Beyond seafood sourcing, Fish City have embedded responsible practices across their operation: biodegradable straws and takeaway cutlery, partnerships with ethical suppliers like a local social enterprise providing bottled water and ongoing efforts to educate guests and the community about sustainability.
What really struck me was how seriously they take this. They run an award-winning educational Kids Club for local schoolchildren to learn about sustainable fishing, they’re involved in marine biodiversity efforts, and they uphold high standards that go far beyond the kitchen. All of this positions Fish City not just as a great place to eat, but as a leader in Belfast’s sustainability restaurant scene. Forward-thinking, impactful and genuinely inspiring.
So, if you’re in Belfast and care about flavour and the planet, Fish City is a must visit. Delicious food, thoughtful service and a sustainability journey worth celebrating. I’ll definitely be returning.
