Tucked away on the Belmont Road in East Belfast, Smart is the kind of cafe that feels rooted in its community from the moment you walk in. It’s relaxed, welcoming and clearly built around doing things properly, on the plate and behind the scenes too. This is a place that knows its regulars, supports its neighbours and takes pride in small details that add up to something meaningful!
Food wise, Smart delivers exactly what you want from a local cafe. It's comforting, well made and delicious. I went for the breakfast bap and it absolutely hit the spot. Fresh bread, generously filled and cooked with care. It was one of those simple breakfasts that reminds you how good things can be when quality ingredients are handled well. Nothing overworked, nothing trying too hard, just a solid, tasty start to the day.
To drink, I ordered a vanilla matcha, which was smooth, sweet and nicely balanced. The matcha flavour came through without being overpowering and the vanilla softened it perfectly. It felt considered rather than rushed, a small thing but one that shows attention to quality and consistency.
What really sets Smart apart is how thoughtfully they approach sustainability and social responsibility. One of the most impressive initiatives is their twinned toilet (see photos) through the charity toilettwinning.org. By sponsoring a toilet in Uganda, Smart is helping provide access to clean water, sanitation and safe waste systems, something many of us take for granted. It’s a quiet but powerful reminder that local businesses can have a global impact.
Their commitment to supporting local suppliers is just as strong. Smart uses ESTD Coffee and Fidela Coffee (see photos), both local brands from the Newtownards Road, keeping their supply chain close to home and supporting Belfast businesses. On top of that, all of their bakery goods come from a local bakery, ensuring freshness while strengthening the local food economy.
Smart isn’t flashy, and it doesn’t need to be. It’s a cafe built on good food, thoughtful choices and genuine care for customers, community and the wider world. A brilliant example of how small places can make a big difference.
